Gathering
Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the convictions of things not seen.
Like Abraham, let us follow God, even when we don’t know where we are going.
By faith, let us look forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Let us worship the God whose promises call and claim us

Song                                    “I Come With Joy”                                 GTG #515

I come with joy, a child of God,
forgiven, loved and free,
the life of Jesus to recall,
in love laid down for me.
I come with Christians far and near
to find, as all are fed,
the new community of love
in Christ's communion bread.
As Christ breaks bread, and bids us share,
each proud division ends.
The love that made us, makes us one,
and strangers now are friends.
The Spirit of the risen Christ,
unseen, but ever near,
is in such friendship better known,
alive among us here.
Together met, together bound
by all that God has done,
we'll go with joy, to give the world
the love that makes us one

Call to Confession
Sin shuts us down and stops us short of hearing of God’s Word. Let us open ourselves to  hearing God’s truth and free ourselves to follow God’s path.

Prayer of Confession
God of Hope and Promise, we confess we do not always believe. We confess our questions and complaints catch up to us. We cannot understand our suffering and the suffering of others. Forgive  us when we give up on you and ourselves. Return and restore us to right relationship. Help us to not disengage but remain steadfast in faithful dialogues of grace.

A time of silent prayer…

Assurance of Pardon
God’s grace is given freely. God’s love is steadfast. Receive the good news that you are forgiven, and live liberated from sin to the glory of God.
The peace of Christ be with you.
And also with you

Turn to those near to you—or across the room—and smile, nod your
head, indicating that your share these blessings with one another

Prayer for Understanding
Your Word guides every step of our journey, God. Help us be attentive to your Word read and proclaimed today, so we can hear your message and act according to your will. Amen.

Reading from the Epistles       Hebrews 10:35-39; 11:1-2, 8-16
The Jewish New Testament

Don’t throw away that courage of yours, which carries with it such a great reward.  For you need to hold out; so that, by having done what God wills, you may receive what [God] has promised.  For
“There is so, so little time!  The one coming will indeed come, he will not delay.  But the person who is righteous will live his life by [faith], and if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him."
However, we are not the kind who shrink back and are destroyed; on the contrary, we keep trusting and thus preserve our lives! Faith is being confident of what we hope for, convinced about things we do not see.  It was for this that Scripture attested the merit of the people of old.
By trusting Avraham obeyed after having been called to go out to a place which God would give him as a possession; indeed, he went out without knowing where he was going.  By trusting he lived as a temporary resident in the land of the promise, as if it were not his, staying in tents with Yitzchak and Ya’akov, who were to receive what was promised along with him.  For he was looking forward to the city with permanent foundations, of which the architect and builder is God.
By trusting he received potency to father a child, even though he was past the age for it, as was Sarah herself; because he regarded the one who had made the promise as trustworthy.  Therefore this one man, who was virtually dead, fathered descendants
As numerous as the stars in the sky, and as countless as the grains of sand on the seashore.
All these people kept on trusting until they died, without receiving what had been promised.  They had only seen it and welcomed it from a distance, while acknowledging that they we are aliens and temporary residents on the earth.  For people who speak this way make it clear that they are looking for a homeland.  Now if they were to keep recalling the one they left, they would have an opportunity to return; but as it is, they aspire to a better homeland, a heavenly one.  This is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, for God has prepared for them a city.

Reading from the Gospels       Matthew 13:31-33, 44-45
He put before them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; 32 it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches." 33 He told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened44 "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls;

Sermon by the Rev. Russell Lehman

*Affirmation of Faith   from “A Brief Statement of Faith” pcusa
In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondage. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still.

Special Music "Above" All-Smith sung by Keisha Prime

Above all powers
Above all kings
Above all nature
And all created things
Above all wisdom
And all the ways of man
You were here
Before the world began

Above all kingdoms
Above all thrones
Above all wonders
The world has ever known
Above all wealth
And treasures of the earth
There's no way to measure
What You're worth

Crucified
Laid behind a stone
You lived to die
Rejected and alone
Like a rose
Trampled on the ground
You took the fall
And thought of me
Above all

Above all powers
Above all kings
Above all nature
And all created things
Above all wisdom
And all the ways of man
You were here
Before the world began

Above all kingdoms
Above all thrones
Above all wonders
The world has ever known
Above all wealth
And treasures of the earth
There's no way to measure
What You're worth

You took the fall
And thought of me
Above all

Like the rose
Trampled on the ground
You took the fall
And thought of me
Above all

Distribution of Elements

Prayer after Communion
God of grace, thank you for this feast of grace and life.
As we have been served, help us to serve our neighbors.
As we have been fed, help us to feed all who are hungry.
As we have been loved, help us to love the world which you have created –
Because in Christ you have loved us.  Amen

*Hymn               “We’re Marching to Zion”                             AAHH #590

Come, we that love the Lord,
And let our joys be known;
Join in a song with sweet accord,
And thus surround the throne.

Refrain:
We’re marching to Zion,
Beautiful, beautiful Zion;
We’re marching upward to Zion,
The beautiful city of God.

Let those refuse to sing,
Who never knew our God;
But children of the heav’nly King
May speak their joys abroad.

The hill of Zion yields
A thousand sacred sweets
Before we reach the heav’nly fields,
Or walk the golden streets.

Then let our songs abound,
And every tear be dry;
We’re marching through Immanuel’s ground
To fairer worlds on high.

Postlude "Where I Belong-Building 429"
Sometimes it feels like I'm watching from the outside
Sometimes it feels like I'm breathing, but am I alive?
I will keep searching for answers that aren't here to find
All I know is I'm not home yet
This is not where I belong
Take this world and give me Jesus
This is not where I belong
So when the walls come falling down on me
And when I'm lost in the current of a raging sea
I have this blessed assurance holding me
All I know is I'm not home yet
This is not where I belong
Take this world and give me Jesus
This is not where I belong
When the earth shakes
I wanna be found in you
When the lights fade
I wanna be found in you
All I know is I'm not home yet
This is not where I belong
Take this world and give me Jesus
This is not where I belong
All I know is I'm not home yet
This is not where I belong
Take this world and give me Jesus
This is not where I belong
Where I belong
where I belong
Where I belong
where I belong
