OPENING WORDS (from Psalm 47

Shout for joy, sing songs of praise, for God reigns over all the earth!
God has gone up with a shout! Sound the trumpets and sing songs of praise!

PRAYER FOR THE DAY

O God of glory, sovereign of all nations, the risen and ascended Christ calls us to carry your message of life to all people. Led by the power of your Holy Spirit, may we witness always to the hope to which we are called as we share Christ’s love to the ends of the earth. Amen.

MUSIC OFFERING What A Friend We Have In Jesus by Charles Converse

  1. What a Friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
    What a privilege to carry
    Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
    Everything to God in prayer!
    2
    Have we trials and temptations?
    Is there trouble anywhere?
    We should never be discouraged,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
    Jesus knows our every weakness,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
    3
    Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
    Precious Savior, still our refuge—
    Take it to the Lord in prayer;
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
    Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.

PRAYER FOR MEMORIAL DAY by John HUnter, Scotland, 20th Century

Almighty God, before whom stand the living and the dead, we your children,
whose mortal life is but a hand’s breadth, give thanks to you:
For all those through whom you have blessed our pilgrimage, whose lives
have empowered us, whose influence is a healing grace, we lift up thankful
hearts.
For those who sacrifice themselves, our brothers and sisters who have given
their lives for the sake of others, we lift up thankful hearts.
That we may hold them in our continual remembrance, and ever think of
them as with you in that city whose gates are not shut by day and where there
is no night, we lift up thankful hearts.
That we may now be dedicated to working for a world where labor is
rewarded, fear dispelled, and nations are made one. Amen.

READING FROM THE GOSPEL:    Luke 24: 44—53

“Then he said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you -- that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him, and1 returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God."

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

During these days it is good for us to remember the gifts God has given us:
talents and abilities to be used for personal satisfaction and the common good, parents, teachers, and mentors who have taught us, and experiences that have shaped us. Take a moment to reflect on those things for which you are thankful. Let us give thanks and seek ways of giving back.

CLOSING PRAYER

May God, who creates, redeems, and sustains, keep us steadfast in faith, buoyant in hope, and abounding in love. May the blessings of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, remain with us always. Amen.

  QUESTION FOR REFLECTION

Who are the people upon whom you depend the most? Do you remember to say thank you? Think hard, how do you get your food? Who makes you feel secure? Where do you spend most of your time?
