Service of the Word for November 14, 2021
The Twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost
A Season of Gratitude, Stewardship, Thanksgiving

Welcome: Greetings in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ!
Questions for Reflection: Think of the many ways in which people are ‘imprisoned,’ ‘chained.’ What specific constraint is in your own life for which you might pray that the Holy Spirit show you a path toward freedom?

Prelude:  “O What Shall I Render?”   TPH #557 sung by Keisha Prime

Call to Worship

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
   to sing praises to God's name.
God visits the earth and waters it;
   God enriches it greatly and provides the people with grain.
Bless our God, O peoples, let the sound of His praise be heard,
   We will give thanks to the Lord with our whole heart!
The earth has yielded its increase;
   God, our God, has blessed us.
May God continue to bless us;
   let all the ends of the earth revere him.

Opening Prayer
Creator God, who hears the prayers of those in distress and of those who sing for joy, we give you thanks for the ever-enlarging communion of your people and for your steadfast love for all creation. We praise you and give you thanks for the ways your healing, self-giving love comes to us, in Jesus’ name.  Amen

*Hymn“God, You Spin the Whirling Planets”                   TPH # 285

Prayer for Illumination
Eternal God, speak your Word to us this day that by the power of your Holy Spirit your mercy may dwell in our hearts toward all your people. Make known to us this hour your love for all creation. Amen.

Litany from the Scriptures

In the new days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh, and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young ones will see visions, and your old ones will dream dreams. Acts 2:17

For we are God’s poem, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God has prepared as our way of life. Ephesians 2:10

There is no longer Jew or Greek, enslaved or free, there is no longer male or female; for all of you are one. Galatians 3:28

For we are God’s poem, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God has prepared as our way of life

See the home of the divine is among mortals. God will dwell with them; they will be God’s people, wiping every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. For I am making all things new. Revelations 21:3-5

For we are God’s poem, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God has prepared as our way of life

Statement of Faith from The Book of Order of the PCUSA, “Foundations…F1.01”

The mission of God in Christ gives shape and substance to the life and work of the Church. In Christ, the Church participates in God’s mission for the transformation of creation and humanity by proclaiming to all people the good news of God’s love, offering to all people the grace of God at font and table, and calling all people to discipleship in Christ. Human beings have no higher goal in life than to glorify and enjoy God now and forever, living in covenant fellowship with God and participating in God’s mission.

Pastoral Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer

The following is a modern, ecumenical, version of the Lord’s Prayer, but feel free to use whichever version of the Lord’s Prayer is most meaningful to you.

  Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
  your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
  Give us today our daily bread.
  Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
  Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
  For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever.
Amen.
