Words of Reflection

What does it mean to you to “put your trust in God?” If we really put our trust in God how might it change our lives?

Prelude

As the Deer, sing along with Keisha Prime

Sing along with Keisha Prime
As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after you.  You alone are my hearts desire and I long to worship you.  You alone are my strength, my shield, To you alone may my spirit yield.  You alone are my hearts desire and I long to worship you.

Call to Worship

Sing to the Lord and bless God’s name.  Tell of God’s saving power from day to day. Worship the Lord, and the Lord alone, in holy splendor.

Opening Prayer

Ever faithful God, our protector and our strength, tuck us into the cleft of the rock; when we are anxious; lift us with your mighty hand that we may be courageous; fill our hearts with the desire to do your will, through Christ, who calls us by name. Amen.

Music         Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing          Robert Robinson, c 1758

Sung by Keisha Prime

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for song of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, Mount of God’s unchanging love!
Here I raise my Ebenezer, Hither by Thy help I’m come’
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger, Interposed His precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let that grace, now, like a fetter, Bind my wondering heart to Thee:
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above.

CALL TO CONFESSION

Let us now confess our sin, casting ourselves on the God’s promised mercy and compassion of God.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O God, you have given us all things in Christ and yet we withhold from you the honor and glory that are yours. Instead, we pay tribute to empire, plot to entrap the innocent, mock your truth with empty praise, and put your patience to the test. Forgive us, O God, and by your grace restore in us the image of your face; through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS

Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice!  In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
Thanks be to God!

Prayer for Illumination

Holy Spirit, illumine for us this Word, that the message of the gospel may come to us in power. Amen.

A Reading from the Letter to Galatians 5: 1, 13—15NRSV

For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another.
For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.

A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew 22: 15—22 NRSV

Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?" But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax." And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, "Whose head is this, and whose title?" They answered, "The emperor's." Then he said to them, "Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's." When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

MUSIC YOUR GREAT NAME                                     William and Krissy

Sung by Keisha Prime

Lost are saved find their way
At the sound of your great name
All condemned feel no shame
At the sound of your great name

Every fear has no place
At the sound of your great name
The enemy: he has to leave
At the sound of your great name

Refrain

Jesus
Worthy is the Lamb
That was slain for us
Son of God and man
You are high and lifted up
At the sound of your great name

The fatherless: they find their rest
At the sound of your great name
The sick are healed and the dead are raised
At the sound of your great name.

Refrain

Redeemer, My Healer, Lord Almighty
My Savior, Defender, You Are My King
Redeemer, My Healer, Lord Almighty
My Savior, Defender, You are My King

Jesus
The name of Jesus
You are high and lifted up
And all the world will praise your great name.

Refrain

Sharing of Joys and Concerns

-those who are struggling with health concerns
-those who are involved in court cases
-those whose lives and livelihoods have been disrupted by fires, floods and winds
-our elected officials
- those who stand in harm's way to protect us
- the citizens of this country, that they will exercise their right to vote

Pastoral Prayer

Merciful God, look with compassion on your people, that we may be relieved of the burdens of fear, doubt, and disease and the plagues of greed, lust and arrogance. Heal the sick, comfort those who mourn, and guide those who are making decisions. Strengthen us all to do your will, to stand up to oppression of every kind and to assist those who struggle in poverty. Fill us with your love and grace that we may, in turn, share that love and that grace with all those within our lives and sphere of influence. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen

Lord’s Prayer (Ecumenical Version)
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,
your will be done on earth as in heaven
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen
